Textual Analysis 3

Textual Analysis 3

This is a textual analysis of Flightplan, opening scene:

The other day we watched the opening scene of Flightplan, this was to allow that when we do our main task planning, we can take the conventions of a thriller that Flightplan has and use them within our own opening scene. I will be looking at how the clip affects the audience, the use of media language techniques within the opening sequence and i will also relate the some of my own ideas that i have for the opening sequence. Therefore giving me and my group plenty of information about the thriller genre.

The mise-en-scene used within the opening scene of Flightplan is extremely relevant to the thriller genre, as the high key and low key lighting is used to show contrasts between the two different scenes that are being cross cutted. For example, the high key light is used when the women is in the morgue the high key lighting is a contrast from stereotypical thriller films, as usually in thriller films the lighting is quite low key, creating mystery, however this still puts the reader on edge wondering why the women is in the morgue. Moreover, when the women is in the train station, there is no one around her, when stereo-typically  train stations are extremely busy. This could suggest that maybe the women is alone, linking in with the thriller genre, as most of the time many people that are put in danger in thriller films are the people that are alone.

Also there is a vast range of editing used within this opening scene, for example, the editing is very fast paced at the beginning, and is non continuous, therefore replicating a train, and then the scene is switched to a train station. Also, there is a graphic match towards the end of the clip, leading one scene into another scene. It is when the women is stood in the court yard alone, and there is a low angle looking up, and you see planes fly over her, and then it leads in to the next scene where a mobile is travelling around a child's rooms. Creating contrast between the two scenes.

The cinematography used within the e opening scene of flightplan fits in well with the thriller genre, as the high angle of the women stood by the bench with the branches of a tree above her creates a sense of mystery for the audience, as the tree suggests that something about the women is hidden, and she always has secrets that she is hiding.
