Textual Analysis 2
This is a textual analysis of Limitless, opening scene:
The other day we watched the opening scene of Limitless, this was to allow that when we do our main task planning, we can take the conventions of a thriller that Limitless has and use them within our own opening scene. I will be looking at how the clip affects the audience, the use of media language techniques within the opening sequence and i will also relate the some of my own ideas that i have for the opening sequence. Therefore giving me and my group plenty of information about the thriller genre.
Firstly, there is plenty of editing used within this first opening scene to help our group with the thriller genre, there are some that fit in with the thriller genre, for example: From the inside of the building at the start, the camera zooms backwards and there is a crane shot of the building, creating a sense of height and tension for the audience, as they want to know why the man at the top of the building is preparing to jump. Also there is a voice over in this opening scene, and when the man says 'sidewalk', there is a fast paced crane pan down to the sidewalk, therefore creating a sense of mystery for the audience as they don't know whether he has jumped or not.
Also the sound used within this clip, is extremely effective, as most of the sound is non-diegetic. For example the voice over used throughout the clip lets the audience become familiar with the person talking, and makes the audience feel more involved with the story. Also the soundtrack throughout creates a sense of suspense for the audience, as after hearing the voice over, because he doesn't tell you why he is jumping, it makes the audience wonder, and they are put on the edge of their seats wondering.
There are many extreme close ups and close ups used within this opening scene, especially of the mans face, this could therefore be trying to portray the mans feelings and true emotions, linking in with his non-diegetic voice over in the background. Also at the beginning of the clip there is a wide shot of the large metal door and cardboard boxes around it, this could be portraying that this door could maybe be a key part within the story to come. This is a convention of thriller, as most of the time in thrillers, in the opening scene you need to concentrate otherwise the rest of the story may not make sense.
